‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Director Wants to Make a Prequel Movie With No Humans

If there’s one criticism that fans have consistently leveled at the current American Godzilla film franchise, it’s that there’s too much focus on the human characters and not enough on the monsters. This was especially evident in 2014’s Godzilla, and though it was improved upon in last year’s sequel Godzilla: King of the Monsters, some fans still see the franchise’s human characters as nothing more than a distraction from the main event. Well, Mike Dougherty, the director of King of the Monsters, has a solution for that: he wants to make a prequel movie that’s free of human beings altogether.

Though the franchise is already set to continue — and possibly end — with this fall’s Godzilla vs Kong, Dougherty already has an idea for what the next Monsterverse film should be, assuming there is one. During a recent King of the Monsters online watch party, Dougherty wrote on Twitter, “I’d still love to do GODZILLA B.C. where we finally see this ancient world of man and monster, like a modern day Ray Harryhausen flick. Or maybe we just go for it and finally take humans out of the equation….”

YES. Do it, you cowards! We’ve seen Godzilla and company destroy cities a billion times already, all fans care about now is that sweet monster on monster action. And with no humans and their small-time drama getting in the way, the monster clashes in this type of prequel film would be given more room to breathe, supplying all the drama necessary to propel the film.

Dougherty’s watered-down version of cavemen dealing with Kaiju is also pretty cool (and delightfully old school), but a human-free Monsterverse movie seems like the way to go for us. It would be just the sort of daring filmmaking this franchise needs, and would certainly get people talking. Think about it: a big-budget special effects blockbuster without a single actor. We have no idea how the general public would react to such a thing, but we sure would like to find out!
