Watch the Wild Trailer for ‘Solar Opposites,’ the New Alien Series from ‘Rick & Morty’s Co-Creator

Rick and Morty fans are about to get a dose of even more animated intergalactic hilarity thanks to Solar Opposites, the new animated series from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland.

The show, which Roiland co-created with Rick and Morty writer/producer Mike McMahan, looks like a strange hybrid of Rick and Morty and the ’90s NBC sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. The tone certainly leans more toward Rick and Morty, with a highly-similar animation style, some crude gross-out humor mixed with high science-fiction, and Roiland’s familiar voicework (one of the characters sounds exactly like Rick Sanchez). The story, however, is closer to 3rd Rock. It’s about a team of aliens who crash-land in an American suburb and are forced to try and survive. They pose as a family, complete with a baby that is actually the Pupa, an infant super computer that’s destined to eventually take over the world. Unlike on 3rd Rock, however, these aliens aren’t posing as humans. They are quite obviously living as aliens in a human world, which leads to some wacky scenarios. Here’s the official synopsis, via Collider.

Solar Opposites centers around a team of four aliens who escape their exploding home world only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome. Korvo (Justin Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only see the pollution, crass consumerism, and human frailty while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans and all their TV, junk food, and fun stuff. Their mission: protect the Pupa, a living super computer that will one day evolve into its true form, consume them, and terraform the Earth.

The first trailer for the series has been released, and while Solar Opposites certainly looks like it will match Rick and Morty in terms of its outrageousness, the humor doesn’t quite seem up to snuff compared to its predecessor. That could be due to a lack of involvement on the part of Dan Harmon, Rick and Morty‘s other co-creator who is very highly-regarded in the comedy community. See it for yourself below.

Will Solar Opposites be the next Rick & Morty, or will it just be an underwhelming imposter? Find out when the series starts streaming on Hulu on May 8.
