The Latest ‘Antlers’ Trailer Will Make You Believe in Monsters

With his directorial efforts on movies like Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy, and Oscar-winner The Shape of Water, Guillermo del Toro has proven time and time again that he knows a thing or two about monsters. Now, the acclaimed filmmaker is unleashing his most-frightening creature yet in the del Toro-produced horror film Antlers, and the film’s latest trailer just might convince you that monsters are real.

The movie is about a mysterious antlered beast that’s gone on a gruesome murdering spree in a small Oregon town. And what’s even more disturbing is the monster seems to share some kind of special connection with a young boy in the town. The latest trailer depicts the boy discussing the monster as if he knows it well, as well as a grandfatherly Native American man discussing the supposedly-mythical creature as something that’s very real to locals. Check it out below.

Details on the plot remain scarce, but given the clues unveiled in this trailer, we’re pretty confident in saying that Antlers is probably about a wendigo. The wendigo is a terrifying legendary creature from northern Native American folklore that is frequently depcited as having antlers. According to legend, humans are said to turn into the demonic wendigo after consuming human flesh — a cautionary tale against cannibalism. With the boy in the film sharing such a special connection with the creature (the plot synopsis says it lives in his home), we’re betting that the film’s wendigo is one of his family members… which may mean that someone in his family ate somebody. Ewww.

We’ll find out if our monster hypothesis is correct when Antlers stalks theaters on April 17.
