When we first heard that Chris Rock was making a Saw movie, we were intrigued — if a little confused. Now, the first trailer for the comedian’s take on the horror franchise is here, and it’s nothing like what we were expecting.
The film is called Spiral: From the Book of Saw, and it stars Rock and Samuel L. Jackson. Darren Lynn Bousman, who helmed the second, third, and fourth Saw films, returns to direct this one, while Rock is executive producing. The former SNL star came up with the story for the film, which is about a cop-targeting serial killer who seems to have ties to the late torturer/killer Jigsaw. Here’s the official synopsis:
A sadistic mastermind unleashes a twisted form of justice in SPIRAL, the terrifying new chapter from the book of SAW. Working in the shadow of an esteemed police veteran (Samuel L. Jackson), brash Detective Ezekiel “Zeke” Banks (Chris Rock) and his rookie partner (Max Minghella) take charge of a grisly investigation into murders that are eerily reminiscent of the city’s gruesome past. Unwittingly entrapped in a deepening mystery, Zeke finds himself at the center of the killer’s morbid game.
The bulk of the film’s first trailer looks decidedly more like an intense crime thriller than a horror movie, and doesn’t really resemble a Saw movie at all. That is until we get to the trailer’s final scene, where we find an Easter egg from the original film in the form of a very familiar “game” that has trapped Rock’s character. Check it out below.
Here’s hoping Rock can make it out of this with all of his limbs intact. Spiral hits theaters on May 15.
