Is nothing sacred? We’ve known for some time that Hollywood is willing to remake anything and everything, but the public may have finally reached its breaking point when it comes what we’re willing to accept from these endless reboots.
Buried within a new Variety profile on legendary producer Norman Lear is a comment from Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra where he mentions in passing that there is interest in remaking the 1987 fantasy classic The Princess Bride, on which Lear was a producer. “We have so many people coming to us saying, ‘We want to remake this show or that show,'” Vinciquerra said. “Very famous people whose names I won’t use, but they want to redo The Princess Bride … Not a month goes by when we don’t have an idea coming from some very big name wanting to do things with Norman.”
Now, this is obviously just an example of Vinciquerra trying to emphasize how important and timeless Lear’s work is, but that’s not how most people took it. The Internet collectively lost its mind at the mere (inconceivable!) thought of someone making the Rob Reiner comedy. We’ll spare you the bulk of the fan reactions — this is a family site, after all — but here’s a strongly-worded protest from the film’s star Cary Elwes:

We’re not sure if anybody wants a peanut, but we’re pretty positive no one wants a reboot of The Princess Bride.
