‘Killer Sofa’ Trailer Will Make You Afraid to Go in Your Living Room

There’s no better feeling after a long day of work than returning home to kick back on your sofa and relax with the comforting glow of your TV (preferably tuned to COMET). But what if your sofa decided it wanted to kill you? That’s the question posed by the absurd new horror flick Killer Sofa, and we’re thinking a homicidal couch just might put a wrinkle in your usual evening routine.

The New Zealand movie, even though it’s called Killer Sofa, is actually about a possessed recliner — which is a type of chair and decidedly not a sofa. Why, then, isn’t the movie called Killer Recliner? Does sofa mean something else in New Zealand? Anyway, we’re veering off track here. The film is about a haunted recliner that contains a type of evil spirit known as a dybbuk. When a young woman comes into possession of the chair, the Barcalounger falls in love with her and begins murdering anyone who might stand — or sit — between them. Here’s the official synopsis, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting:

Francesca always attracted weirdos. When one of her stalkers is found dead, she looks for comfort from her best friend, Maxi. Meanwhile, Maxi’s grandfather, Jack, a disgraced Rabbi, comes across a reclining chair containing a Dybbuk inside. Jack and his voodoo sorceress partner try to find out where the recliner has been delivered while exploring Jack’s newfound gift for communicating with the other world. Meanwhile, the reclining chair becomes enchanted by Francesca and starts committing crimes of passion.

The best thing about the film’s trailer is how straight it plays everything. There’s not a hint of cheekiness in the entire thing, despite the fact that it features, among other things, a chair throwing a person off a balcony and a spring stalking someone through a window. Whether this was done on purpose or the filmmakers really don’t see the absurdity of the plot is a mystery, but we know one thing: This movie looks awesome.

Killer Sofa arrives on Digital and DVD next month.
