The latest season of American Horror Story is heading back to the ’80s with a slasher movie tribute fit for Jason Voorhees himself.
The first trailer has been released for American Horror Story: 1984, and the season looks like a must-watch for fans of the decade’s slasher movies. Set at a summer camp (where else?), the series follows a group of friends from an aerobics class who end up being terrorized by a murderous escaped asylum patient known as Mr. Jingles — who may or may not have been run over by the protagonists on their way to the camp.
There are obviously loads of Friday the 13th references here with the camp setting, as well as strong Halloween vibes with the escaped mental patient going on a murderous rampage. There’s also a surprisingly strong influence from classic ’90s slasher film I Know What You Did Last Summer, with the series’ young leads running someone over in their car and the series’ killer donning a black hood and wielding a hook. There are likely loads of other influences present as well, so see how many you can pick up in the American Horror Story: 1984 trailer below.
American Horror Story: 1984 stars Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Gus Kenworthy, and DeRon Horton. It’s set to premiere on FX on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
