We’re still not convinced that Quentin Tarantino’s R-rated Star Trek movie will ever happen, but if it does, we know who’s ready to play his Captain Kirk.
The one and only William Shatner has thrown his support behind the unusual project, stating that he would like to reprise his role as good ol’ James T. if the film ever gets made. “Quentin Tarantino said something in the paper that somebody said to me, that he loved me. And Quentin, I love you,” the 88-year-old actor told Reuters. “If you’re going to do Star Trek, fifty years later, a few pounds heavier, come on, not a problem … I’d like to do it. Whether I’d be up for it, I don’t know.”

While it’s certainly great news to hear that Shatner is interested in revisiting his most iconic role, he also seems to recognize how rare it is for actors of his vintage to star in a major production. Let’s be honest, there aren’t a ton of actors running working today who are on the cusp of 90 — especially in big-budget sci-fi movies. Then again, there are exceptions. Betty White and Dick Van Dyke are still going strong well into their 90s, and to be fair to Shatner, he still seems pretty sharp and healthy.
Honestly, we’d love to see the Shat slip back into his old captain’s chair, even though Kirk did die in Star Trek: Generations. But hey, if anyone is going to figure out the proper way to bring him back, it’s Tarantino.
