Netflix has unveiled the first batch of official photos from its upcoming fantasy TV series The Witcher, billed by some as the next Game of Thrones, giving us our first good look at Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia along with a couple of his friends.
The Witcher is based on the series of bestselling novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. In the U.S., the series is best known for its trilogy of wildly successful video games, the most recent being 2015’s The Witcher III: Wild Hunt. The series follows a Witcher — a monster hunter with supernatural powers — named Geralt of Rivia who travels throughout the Continent slaying evil beasts. Cavill is a big fan of the books and campaigned for the lead role in Netflix’s series before being cast. Judging from the first official photos below, he certainly looks like he’s giving it his all.
Also being revealed for the first time are Anya Cholatra as Geralt’s lover, Yennefer, and Freya Allan as the pair’s adopted daughter, Princess Ciri.
The series has also unveiled its first poster, along with its tagline: The worst monsters are the ones we create.
The series’ official synopsis is as follows, and it doesn’t seem like it will stray too far from the stories of the books and games with which fans are already familiar:
Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
The Witcher is set to premiere on Netflix sometime this fall.
