It sounds like a lot of familiar faces will be crossing streams in next year’s Ghostbusters sequel.
Actress Sigourney Weaver, who portrayed Dana Barrett in 1984’s Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel, recently revealed to Parade Magazine that she will be reprising her role in director Jason Reitman’s upcoming sequel. Not only that, but Weaver also let slip that OG Ghostbusters Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd would be joining her in the film, stating, “It’s going to be crazy working with the guys again!” Various outlets have since reached out to Reitman and Sony Pictures looking for confirmation, and so far no one has opted to confirm or deny anything. But since it doesn’t make much sense to do a Ghostbusters 3 without the original Ghostbusters, we’re inclined to believe that Weaver is speaking the truth here.
That still leaves a handful of original Ghostbusters stars who are not yet rumored to appear in the third installment. First and foremost would be Ernie Hudson, who portrayed Winston Zeddemore in the previous films. Hudson has previously expressed interest in appearing in the new film, and at last weekend’s Ghostbusters Fan Fest in Los Angeles — which Hudson attended — Reitman confirmed that the actor has read the script for the new film. Two more question marks would be Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz) and Rick Moranis (Louis Tully). Moranis retired from live-action acting in the ’90s and has shown little interest in returning to work in front of the camera, but Potts could be a different story. While she didn’t appear in person at Fan Fest, she did send along a video message to those in attendance, which shows that she still has some involvement with the franchise. Harold Ramis, the fourth original Ghostbuster and co-writer of the first two films, passed away in 2014.
Whatever original stars show up in the new Ghostbusters film, they’re not expected to be the main focus. Instead, the story will largely center around a family, including two children played by McKenna Grace (Captain Marvel) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). The film will start haunting theaters on July 10, 2020.
