Godzilla: King of the Monsters is set to unite the monstrous Kaiju with a number of other legends, such as Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan. But perhaps the biggest icon joining Godzilla in the film is a famous rock song from 42 years ago.
Blue Öyster Cult’s classic track “Godzilla” will finally appear alongside its namesake in a film, though it will be in the form of a cover version. The new incarnation of the track is by Bear McCreary, who composed the film’s soundtrack, and features vocals by System of a Down’s Serj Tankian. This version of the song is certainly different from the original, as it features a lot of chanting and pounding percussion that is not present in BOC’s version. Have a listen below.
By contrast, BOC’s version first appeared as the lead track on the band’s 1977 album Spectres. The song features a distinctive guitar riff and cheeky lyrics that are literally about Godzilla destroying Tokyo, which makes it pretty surprising that this is the first time a version of it has been included in a Godzilla movie. You can check it out below, though you’ve undoubtedly heard it numerous times before.
While some may have preferred the original song to show up in the film, it’s undeniably awesome that any version of “Godzilla” is now appearing alongside the big fella himself in a film. Go, go, Godzilla!
