Creepshow remains probably the best horror anthology film ever made, and now that wondrous collaboration between Stephen King and George Romero is making its way to TV in a brand new reboot from Walking Dead executive producer Greg Nicotero.
The new series will, like the film, be a horror anthology, with every episode featuring a different story and a different director. “Creepshow is a project very close to my heart! It is one of those titles that embraces the true spirit of horror… thrills and chills celebrated in one of its truest art forms, the comic book come to life!” Nicotero said in a statement from Shudder, where the series will stream. “I’m honored to continue the tradition in the ‘spirit’ in which it was created.”
The original film from 1982 was created as an homage to the horror comics of the 1950s, like Tales from the Crypt and The Vault of Horror, and it sounds like Nicotero is committed to keeping that tradition alive in the new reboot. The producer, director, and special effects expert has a long association with Romero, having worked on 1985’s Day of the Dead and visiting the set of the original Creepshow, so he certainly sounds like the right man for the job. Nicotero was even mentored by the legendary Tom Savini, who handled the effects on the original Creepshow. Nicotero will serve as the new series’ executive producer, supervisor to its “creative elements,” and one of its directors, according to io9.
Creepshow definitely has potential as an anthology series — especially with Nicotero at the helm — and we’ll find out if it lives up to that potential when it premieres on Shudder next year.
