We recently covered the upcoming sequel to Deep Blue Sea, but now comes word that that other notorious ’90s B movie about oversized aquatic carnivores is getting a new installment for 2018 as well. We’re talking, of course, about giant crocodile movie Lake Placid.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Lake Placid: Legacy will be premiering on Syfy sometime later this year. And this isn’t some Betty White-induced fever dream — the new film has apparently already finished shooting! The sequel was produced by Blue Ice Pictures, who have actually been tweeting about the film for months. The movie is directed by Dracula 3000 director Darrell Roodt, and stars Katherine Barrell, Tim Rozon, and Luke Newton.

Unless you’re a Lake Placid superfan, you’ll probably be surprised to learn that Legacy won’t actually be the first sequel in the franchise. Following the 1999 original film about a giant crocodile terrorizing a sleepy Maine town, three direct-to-TV sequels were produced beginning in 2007; all of which premiered on Syfy. The series was meant to end in 2012 with the fourth installment, Lake Placid: The Final Chapter, but bared its teeth again three years later in the crossover film Lake Placid vs. Anaconda, the fifth franchise installment (the Anaconda film series also consists of five films now, in case you’re wondering).
Unfortunately, the new movie has not yet revealed any plot details, but we’re going to go out on a limb and say that it revolves around a gigantic man-eating crocodile living somewhere it shouldn’t be. Call it a hunch.
