‘The X-Files’ New Season Has Announced Its Premiere Date & It’s Sooner Than You Think

It’s been nearly two years since The X-Files season 10 shocked the world by bringing back the ’90s conspiracy series nearly 14 years after it went off the air, all while barely missing a step. Ever since then we’ve been anxiously waiting for follow up season, and Fox has just revealed when it will be airing. Thankfully, it’s a lot sooner than we were expecting.

The X-Files season 11 is set to premiere on January 3, 2018, which is less than two months away. The new season will consist of ten episodes — a significant boost over the six season 10 episodes — and a full 80 percent of them will be “Monster of the Week” episodes that don’t delve into the complex larger mythology of the series (yay!). There will be some mythology dealt with, of course, and much of it is expected to revolve around William, the missing — and possibly superpowered — son of Mulder and Scully.

In addition to Mulder and Scully, other returning characters include AD Skinner, the Cigarette Smoking Man, Monica Reyes, season 10’s Agents Einstein & Miller, blast from the past Jeffrey Spender, and even thought-dead characters like the CSM’s ex-wife Cassandra Spender and the Lone Gunmen’s Langly. Also, actors Haley Joel Osment and Barbara Hershey have joined the cast for the new season, portraying new characters.

Fox has also released a new poster touting the release date, and while it doesn’t really give any clues about the upcoming season, it at least offers proof that more X-Files is indeed on the way soon, along with the promise that “the truth is closer than ever.” We can’t wait.
