The Crews From Both ‘Battlestar Galactica’s Are Going to Cross Paths

Fans have long debated over which crew of Battlestar Galactica was superior: That of the original series from 1978, or the one from the acclaimed 2004 reboot. Now, that age-old question is about to be answered, as both groups are set to square off for the first time ever in a new comic book series.

The appropriately-titled Battlestar Galactica vs. Battlestar Galactica from Dynamite Comics will be written by mega-accomplished writer Peter David, who’s penned numerous Star Trek novels, TV episodes for series such as Babylon 5, and several comics, including a memorable 12-year run on The Incredible Hulk for Marvel. So if anybody can pull off this gargantuan clashing of icons, it’s him. Here’s what David told Newsarama about coming aboard the project:

“With all deference to Star Trek, Firefly… hell, even Space Cases… I firmly believe the recent Battlestar Galactica series is the best [sci-fi] series ever. And in reviewing the original series for the first time in decades, I was amazed at how it held up far better than I ever could have believed. Forty years away from it being dismissed as a Star Wars rip-off, the first BSG had a style, story, and characters all its own and deserved far more than the truncated run it received. So I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be a part of this truly historic meeting, which was indeed set up in the new series: All of this has happened before, and it will happen again.”

The two crews will come together, apparently in conflict at first, after the discovery of “the last of the reptilian parent race that created the Cylons,” known as Kali. Here’s how Dynamite describes that event setting up the limited-run event series:

“[That] serves as the catalyst for a face-to-face meeting between the crews serving Commander Adama (including Apollo and Starbuck, three characters immortalized on the small screen by actors Lorne Green, Richard Hatch, and Dirk Benedict, respectively) and Admiral William Adama (of the 2003 Reimagined BSG series, as played by Edward James Olmos). Sparks will fly as Lee Adama, Kara Thrace, and their fellow Viper pilots meet their strangely familiar counterparts… and discover the threat that two colliding universes of Cylons pose!”

Hold up… two colliding universes of Cylons? Uh, yeah, we could see how that might be perceived as a threat. The series is expected to hit newsstands sometime in 2018, so place your bets now on which BSG crew will reign supreme.
