The Trailer for Stephen King’s ‘1922’ Is Full of Old-Timey Scares

Is it 1983? That year, three non-sequel Stephen King movie adaptations were released: Cujo, The Dead Zone, and Christine; all of which have since become either cult classics or cultural touchstones. But this year is adding up to be an even bigger year for King fans. Two of the author’s movies have been released in theaters (The Dark Tower and It), Gerald’s Game hits Netflix on September 29, and now we have a trailer for yet another King movie: 1922.

The film is based on King’s 2010 novella of the same name about a farmer confessing to the murder of his wife in 1922, but as the trailer reveals, there’s a lot more to it than that. See, the man may not be the world’s most reliable narrator, and after he kills his wife he begins being tormented by a scourge of rats, strange hallucinations, and oh yeah, his wife’s corpse. The trailer showcases all of these terrifying events and builds them beautifully, creating a sense of unease set to some spooky and crackly old-timey music piping out of a phonograph. Check it out below.

King fans will recognize this film’s main character is played by Thomas Jane, who played the lead in another King adaptation — The Mist — which is one of the best movies based on the author’s work. Jane was also one of the stars of Dreamcatcher, which ranks as one of the worst King adaptations. Judging from this trailer however, it looks like 1922 is more The Mist than Dreamcatcher.

1922 is written and directed by Zak Hilditch, who previously helmed the apocalyptic sci-fi drama These Final Hours. It hits Netflix on October 20 — just in time for Halloween.
