Stargate Origins

A New Stargate Show Was Just Announced at San Diego Comic-Con

Stargate is back! It’s been six long years since Stargate Universe came to an end, but MGM has just announced that the franchise will soon be returning with a brand new series.

The announcement came during the studio’s Stargate panel on July 20 at San Diego Comic-Con, and it was quite the surprise, as many fans had assumed Stargate’s return to Comic-Con was strictly a celebration of the 20th anniversary of SG-1. But the Stargate team had a trick up their sleeve, or rather through their wormhole, as they announced a new original series, Stargate Origins.

The 10 episode series, co-produced by New Form, is MGM’s first ever premium linear digital series. The show will explore a previously unknown time period in Stargate lore, following a young Catherine Langford’s as she “embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness.”

“We’ve been eager to revisit the Stargate franchise, and create an all-new story that honors the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” said Kevin Conroy, President of Digital & New Platforms at MGM. “We view Stargate Origins as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with Stargate Origins.”

The show will be available on MGM’s new subscription-based digital platform and fan experience, Stargate Command, which will also offer subscribers exclusive access to content from throughout the franchise’s 25 year history. “We saw a need for a definitive hub for the Stargate fanbase to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new,” said Chris Ottinger, MGM’s President of Worldwide Television Distribution & Acquisitions. “Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.”
