If you’ve seen Kong: Skull Island, then you already know there are plenty more monsters waiting in the wings for the next installment of Warner Bros.’ new MonsterVerse, 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Now, one of those beasts is being teased in a new video.
The Kong: Skull Island Twitter account has recently been sharing a series of videos that detail the timeline of Monarch, the monster-hunting organization at the center of the new franchise. The newest timeline reveals a quarantine zone that was set up around a dormant volcano in 1991, a 1995 return expedition to Skull Island, and the discovery of Mothra (or at least his cocoon) in 2009. But the most intriguing is the detail of the discovery of a three-headed monster under the ice of Antarctica in 2016 — a monster who can be no other but Ghidorah.
Referred to in the video as “Monster Zero,” the timeline gives the following description:
When Monarch discover an extraordinary superspecies sealed beneath the Antarctic ice sheet, Dr. Vivienne Graham leads the effort to build a covert containment and research facility around the dormant creature. Her classified field notes contain a mysterious footnote: “The Devil has three heads.”
Ghidorah, a winged three-headed dragon, has long been one of Godzilla’s most iconic and powerful foes, making his first appearance in 1964’s Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, and last appearing in 2001’s Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. The beast is set to appear in Godzilla: King of the Monsters alongside fellow kaiju Mothra and Rodan in what will mark his debut in an American production after appearing in nine Japanese films over five decades, where he’ll duke it out with the others in a battle royale to see who’s the baddest beast of them all.
