In the summer of 1947, something mysterious crashed in the desert of Roswell, New Mexico, and the UFO phenomenon took on a new mythology that’s still raging today. This year marks the 70th anniversary of the incident, and to mark the occasion, COMET is celebrating with a series of alien and conspiracy-related stories called THE COMET ARCHIVES.
This installment in the series explores the darkest corners of the government and exposes 17 of the creepiest, strangest, and most fantastical declassified government documents that have been released by the FBI and CIA in recent years thanks in large part to the Freedom of Information Act. So take a look and see if the truth really is out there.
1. A Strange Alien Vessel?
A document from 1993 describes a vessel featuring “large, circular fields or rings of energy that are projected out at an extremely fast rate” and a 60-100 mile “energy ring” that surrounds the vessel and forms a “white fog” that blocks interference. 2. Is the Air Force Housing Extraterrestrial Beings?
This 1983 copy of a Reuters article discusses a lawsuit calling on the Air Force to release any extraterrestrial bodies they were holding on to. Why exactly would the CIA save this? Read it here.
3. Remote Viewing Is Inherent to All People
This summary of the CIA’s Project Star Gate, which was a two decade investigation into whether psychic powers exist and could be used for spying, states that remote viewing is a “talent which is inherent to every human to some degree.” Uh, what? Read it here.
4. A Magical Healer in the U.S.S.R.
This 1969 document, titled “Magician Walks Into a Laboratory,” describes a man in the then-Soviet state of Georgia who was allegedly able to heal people by touching them. Read it here.
5. Poltergeists Exist
This is a study done comparing poltergeist activity in Brazil and the United States. The study concludes that in the U.S., the activity is considered psychic phenomena, where in Brazil, it’s considered sorcery. At no point does the study question the validity of poltergeist activity — whatever it is — being real. Read it here.
6. The “Flying Saucer Problem”
This 1952 memo is a call to arms asking for ideas on how best to attack the “flying saucer problem.” What problem would that be, exactly? Read it here.
7. Documented Telekinesis
A fact-finding trip to Russia describes a number of fantastical claims, with the most intriguing being experiments supposedly proving that a person could move objects with their mind. Read it here.
8. Did Hitler Flee to Argentina?
Nothing to see here, just an FBI investigation dating to 1945 about Hitler possibly escaping Germany and fleeing to Argentina. Read it here.
9. Psychic Probe of Jupiter
As a part of the Star Gate program, this remote viewing session attempted to see what Jupiter was like, several years before any space mission to the planet. Read it here.
10. Alien Involvement in the Kennedy Assassination
In 2004, someone filed a Freedom of Information Act request demanding to see all documents to extraterrestrial involvement in the JFK assassination. They also wanted all documents relating to themselves “whether they pertain to spaces aliens and the Kennedy assassination or not.” They even state they’re prepared to pay for the documents — but not if they’re over $12. 11. Fireball UFOs Over African Uranium Mines
The CIA has tons of UFO reports, but this 1952 sighting of fireball discs over uranium mines in the Belgian Congo may be the most interesting; especially since it includes diagrams of the reported craft. Read it here.
12. Cattle Mutilation
The FBI was pretty interested in cattle mutilations in the 1970s, and their documented theories behind the phenomena include witchcraft, UFOs, and secret army experiments. Read it here.

This explosive document about a government conspiracy to cover-up the existence of UFOs was deemed by the FBI to be an elaborate hoax, but was that determination just another part of the cover-up? Read it here.
14. New Mexico Crash
We’re all familiar with the Roswell crash, but how about this 1950 account by an Air Force investigator stating that three downed flying saucers were recovered in New Mexico, each of them containing 3-foot-tall humanoids in metallic clothing? Read it here.
15. An Entire UFO Magazine
It’s clear the CIA had an interest in UFOs, but copying and preserving an entire 68 page magazine dedicated to the subject seems a bit excessive and more than a little curious. Read it here.
16. MKUltra
Very little documentation about MKUltra, the CIA’s notorious mind control program, is available, since most documents were destroyed in the 1970s when the program became public. But this piece sums up the experiments in disturbing fashion. Read it here.
17. Satan Is Taking Over the World
So the CIA saw fit to preserve a news article where some guy talks about Satan, or an equivalent embodiment of evil, taking over the world. Glad to know they’re keeping an eye on that. Read it here.
