We’re roughly halfway through 2017, and tons of movies have already made their way in and out of cinemas. Some have been good, some have been bad, and a few have been instant classics. We’re here to reveal the best of the year so far from the horror, sci-fi, and fantasy genres — in other words, the best 2017 films that are COMET-approved. So take a look at the following 14 films and let us know how many you’ve seen.
14. Ghost in the Shell
OK, the film was controversial and didn’t get stellar reviews, but it’s gorgeous to look at and we’ve got a major soft spot for its neon-tinged cyberpunk setting.
13. Life
Don’t expect to see anything new or groundbreaking here, but do expect a fun old fashioned alien creature feature with thrills to spare.
12. The Blackcoat’s Daughter
A24 has been killing it in the indie horror game lately, and this creepy mystery will keep you guessing until the end.
11. Split
M. Night Shyamalan finally made another good movie, and he even included a twist that manages to be both surprising and fun.
10. Alien: Covenant
After the divisiveness of Prometheus, Ridley Scott finally gave fans another (mostly) proper Alien movie, and boy are we glad he did.
9. Colossal
A new and brilliant take on the giant rampaging monster movie, we’re kinda hoping this one crosses over with King Kong and Godzilla in the future.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2
Sure, it’s a massively-budgeted sequel from money-printing kingmaker Disney, but it still is a blast. Plus… Kurt Russell!
7. Raw
It’s the best movie about cannibalism since, well, ever. Plus, it gets huge bonus points for the fact that people passed out because it was so gruesome.
6. Kong: Skull Island
King Kong returned after over a decade in a film that was way better than it had any right to be, and now has us chomping at the bit for his upcoming showdown with Godzilla.
5. Wonder Woman
It may be a by-the-books superhero movie, but it’s so well-made you’ll be too entertained to be critical.
4. The Void
This is an ’80s sci-fi/horror throwback that drew comparisons to John Carpenter’s The Thing — what more do you need to know?
3. It Comes At Night
Another gem from A24, this inventive psychological thriller is one of their best efforts yet.
2. Logan
Not a superhero movie by any stretch of the imagination, this poignant and beautifully shot sci-fi action/drama was the perfect swan song for Hugh Jackman’s tenure as everybody’s favorite mutant.
1. Get Out
One of the most original horror films ever also ranks as the best-reviewed film of the year so far — something nearly unheard of for a film from this genre.
