Filming may have been halted on movie productions worldwide due to the coronavirus pandemic, but post-production goes on for a number of highly-anticipated upcoming films. That includes director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the classic sci-fi novel Dune, which has just released its first images.

The film boasts an impressive cast, and we get a good look at many of them in character in the new images from Vanity Fair below. There’s Oscar Isaac as Duke Leto Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica Atreides, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Liet Kynes, and Timothée Chalamet as the main protagonist Paul Atreides. Also appearing in the film but not showing up in these images are Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Babs Olusanmokun, and Stellan Skarsgard as the villainous Baron Vladimir Harkonnen.

We’re definitely digging the visual style of the film, as it looks like a clean and timeless future aesthetic that won’t look dated too quickly (looking at you, ’80s Dune movie). The film is of course based on Frank Herbert’s landmark 1965 novel about a future interstellar empire and all the drama and politics that go along with it. Here’s the film’s official synopsis, via Collider.

A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, ‘Dune’ tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence — a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential — only those who can conquer their fear will survive.

Provided there are no COVID-related delays, Dune is expected to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18.
