The First Trailer for Spielberg’s ‘Amazing Stories’ Reboot Is Surprisingly Hopeful

The first trailer has arrived for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Amazing Stories reboot, and it’s much more hopeful and uplifting than we had anticipated.

While Spielberg’s original Amazing Stories was never as scary as similar sci-fi anthology series like The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, the ’80s series still managed its fair share of frights in its day. From ghost trains to killer toupees to creepy Tim Robbins in a mirror, the original version of Amazing Stories wasn’t afraid to get a little spooky from time to time. But the first trailer for the reboot has a complete absence of creepiness, as it looks like the new series will boast an overall uplifting tone. Of course, the inclusion of John Williams’ soaring and cheerful original theme song doesn’t hurt in that aspect, as it helps the trailer evoke more of an E.T. sense of wonder than a Poltergeist feeling of dread, to put it in ’80s Spielberg terms. Check it out below.

The first season of the reboot will include just five episodes, and we can kind of piece together what at least a few of them will be about based on this trailer. One is about a grandfather with superpowers, another seems to deal with a pilot entering some kind of time warp, and a third appears to involve some kind of electrical energy being. Other than that, there’s a lot of ambiguous discussion about conspiracies and vague references to the supernatural, but we’re unlikely to find out anymore before the series premieres.

Amazing Stories debuts on Apple TV+ on March 6.
