The Lodge’ Trailer Looks Like the Scariest Movie of the Year

The 2015 film Goodnight Mommy was one of the creepiest and most unsettling films we’d seen in some time, and now its directors are back with a brand new film that looks to be considerably more terrifying.

A new trailer has been released for The Lodge, the new horror flick from filmmaking duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, and it’s already looking like the scariest movie of the year. The film tells the story of two children who are trapped in a snowed-in cabin with their father’s new fiancée, which sounds awkward, but not exactly scary. But as it turns out, dad’s girlfriend is… let’s say… more than a little strange. The kids discover that she’s apparently the sole survivor of a cult that she belonged to as a kid, and judging from the trailer, it would appear as if she hasn’t quite moved on from whatever zealous beliefs she previously held. Check out the trailer below, along with the official synopsis.

The Lodge follows a family who retreats to their remote winter cabin over the holidays. When the father is forced to abruptly depart for work, he leaves his children, Aidan and Mia, in the care of his new girlfriend, Grace. Isolated and alone, a blizzard traps them inside the lodge as terrifying events summon specters from Grace’s dark past.

In Goodnight Mommy, the twist ending revealed that the kid(s) was the real antagonist, and not the mother as the trailers and most of the film had implied. So could that be what’s going on here? Are these kids pinning some kind of villainy on an innocent woman, or does their caretaker really possess some sort of hidden evil? We’ll find out when The Lodge arrives in theaters on Feb. 7.
