Watch the Late Rutger Hauer Star in the Trailer for Horror Film ‘The Sonata’

We’re still mourning the passing of actor Rutger Hauer, but even though he’s gone, we still haven’t seen the last of the Blade Runner icon on the big screen.

In one of his final performances before his untimely death earlier this year, Hauer filmed a role in an upcoming horror film called The Sonata. Now, the first trailer has been released for the film, giving us the bittersweet opportunity of witnessing Hauer’s greatness one more time. Oddly enough, Hauer’s character in the film is already dead at the start of the film, adding some unintended poignancy to the story.

In The Sonata, Hauer plays a recently-deceased composer who leaves all of his belongings to his estranged daughter Rose (Freya Tingley). After visiting his estate, Rose discovers a sonata that her late father had been working on; one that contains strange symbols with which even she, an accomplished violinist, is unfamiliar. Rose soon learns that the symbols date to an ancient secret society, and the piece of music her father was composing is intended to bring about the Antichrist. Hauer is mostly absent from the trailer, but the brief scenes in which he is seen are all kinds of powerful. Check it out below.

Believe it or not, this won’t be the last time we’ll see a new movie starring Rutger Hauer. The prolific actor completed another three films that have yet to be released, according to his IMDb page, which should act as a small comfort to his fans. The Sonata arrives in theaters and on-demand on Jan. 10.
