‘Doctor Who’ Teaser Reveals Next Season’s Premiere Date

We now know when the next season (or series, for our British friends) of Doctor Who will arrive, and it’s definitely going to help us ring in the New Year in timey-wimey fashion.

The series has released a new trailer for the upcoming season, and with it comes the reveal of the season’s release date: January 1, 2020. We had heard earlier that Jodie Whitaker’s return as the 13th Doctor would occur in “early 2020,” and New Year’s Day is about as early as you can get. In an industry where projects seem to get postponed repeatedly, seeing a show actually surpass expectations when it comes to its release date is a breath of fresh air, and one that should leave its fanbase pretty thrilled.

Then there’s the trailer itself, which opens with the Doctor declaring over the phone: “Crisis. Big crisis. Serious crisis. Big, serious, crisis,” before ending her conversation with “Kisses!” It’s quite the juxtaposition, and it sets up nicely what we think Doctor Who series 12 is going to be like: a balance of big and pivotal action with cheeky British wit. The trailer offers loads of both, with more than a few alien creatures to gawk at and an assortment of jokes to go along with them. And when the Doctor closes out the trailer by asking, “Fancy a trip in the box?” we are very inclined to answer, “Yes.”

Doctor Who series 12 premieres on BBC One and BBC America on January 1.
