‘The Witcher’ Trailer Goes Heavy on the High Fantasy Action

The first full trailer for the upcoming series The Witcher has arrived, and it looks like it has all the trappings of the next great fantasy action series.

The series is based on the Polish novel series of the same name, while also drawing inspiration from the extremely popular videogames that the novels spawned. Fans of the games will no doubt spot a few Easter eggs in the series trailer, such as the familiar gruff voice star Henry Cavill uses as witcher Geralt of Rivia and the shot of Geralt relaxing in a bathtub. The Witcher series is known for its violence, its monsters, its sexuality, and its bleak look at the evil that exists in the world — and it looks like all of those aspects will be well-represented in the new series. Here’s the show’s official synopsis:

Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.

In between all the slick-looking sword fights and brooding, the trailer (which you can watch here) also reveals when The Witcher will premiere on Netflix. All season one episodes will begin streaming on Dec. 20, meaning your holidays are going to be a bit more magical — and violent — than usual.
