George R. R. Martin’s New Project Looks a Lot Like ‘Lord of the Rings’

Game of Thrones‘ final season left a lot of fans disappointed, causing many to look to author George R. R. Martin for a better ending to the novel series he first started writing over 30 years ago. But with no new book in sight and Martin continuing to take on new projects, it looks as though the GoT ending will likely be the only one we’ll ever get. So we might as well start paying attention to Martin’s other work, like this new video game that’s giving off major Lord of the Rings vibes.

As part of E3 2019, From Software and Bandai Namco Entertainment released the first trailer for their upcoming game Elden Ring, simultaneously revealing that Martin crafted the game’s world alongside Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. The trailer doesn’t show much, but the game clearly has a high fantasy setting with monsters and knights in shining armor. Oh, and the narration talks about how someone has destroyed a very powerful ring, an act which has thrust the world into chaos.

Look, we knew Martin was a big Tolkien fan, but this may be a little too on the nose. We were practically expecting the narration to say, “one ring to rule them all.” Still, this trailer does only give a very limited look at the game, so it’s possible the LOTR similarities stop with the powerful ring. We hope that’s the case, because if we wanted to play a LOTR game we’d just play this. Here’s what Martin had to say about the game, according to EW:

“Building the world of Elden Ring with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what Elden Ring has in store for them.”

There is no release date yet for Elden Ring, but when it launches, it will do so on XBox One, PS4, and PC.
