Original ‘Mothra’ Flying to Blu-ray for the First Time in the U.S.

Perhaps the most anticipated monster appearing in the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters — besides the titular king, of course — is Mothra. The fan-favorite has a huge following, and it seems like everyone is psyched to see the giant insect’s modern debut. But what if you’re more into the classic version of the character? Well, we’ve got some good news for you, too.

For the first time ever, the original Mothra from 1961 will be available on Blu-ray in North America. According to Bloody Disgusting, the film is getting a pretty royal treatment for its debut Blu-ray release, courtesy of Mill Creek Entertainment. The Blu-ray comes with a fancy Steelbook case, and includes both the Japanese and English versions of the film, along with special features like trailers, photos, and commentary from sci-fi historians Steve Ryfle and Ed Godziszewski. For a taste of what to expect, and for a refresher on just how weird the original Mothra is (the tiniest women in all creation, anyone?), check out this original trailer below, courtesy of Mill Creek.

The Mothra Blu-ray will arrive in stores on July 19, exactly seven weeks after the newest incarnation of the mighty Monster God makes her debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which hits theaters on May 31.
