Like pretty much all of Jordan Peele’s recent projects, the upcoming Candyman film is shrouded in mystery. We’ve had conflicting reports regarding whether the movie is a sequel, a remake, or a reboot, and now some new comments from original star Tony Todd have us more confused than ever.
While speaking to Sofa King Cool Magazine, Todd revealed that he recently spoke with Peele about the project. And while his comments are fairly cryptic, it definitely sounds to us like he’s going to appear in the movie. Here’s what he had to say, according to Bloody Disgusting:
Out of the blue I got a phone call from Jordan Peele. We’re still waiting for the contract, but the way he explained it to me was that it’s gonna be applause-worthy moments. That’s his words. And it’s flattering, but no matter what happens with that, it’s gonna just put renewed attention on the original.
At first glance, this would simply appear to be Todd recollecting a phone call he received from Peele in which the writer/producer filled the actor in on what he was doing with the franchise that made Todd famous. But upon closer inspection, there appears to be a bit more going on. Todd says “we’re still waiting on the contract,” which to us sounds like he’s saying he’s in talks to appear in the film but the deal is still being worked out. The “applause-worthy moments” mentioned by Todd also seem to be in reference to scenes in the film in which he would actually appear, given their context.
Maybe we’re reading too much into this, but it certainly sounds like Tony Todd will at least have a cameo in Jordan Peele’s upcoming Candyman reboot… we think. We probably won’t find out for sure until the film opens on June 12, 2020.
