Make no mistake about it, this isn’t your parents’ Hellboy. The first poster has been unveiled for the David Harbour-starring reboot, and the Stranger Things star looks absolutely terrifying as the demonic superhero.
The reboot film, which is now just called Hellboy, is arriving just a decade after the first Hellboy franchise concluded with 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, but the new poster is going out of its way to differentiate itself from the previous on-screen version of the character. Compared to the Ron Perlman iteration, this new Hellboy is less cartoonish-looking, more jacked, far scarier, much more intimidating, and literally on fire. Take a look at him below in the new image, via EW:
Frankly, we love just about everything about this poster. It’s very clearly Hellboy, but he looks different enough to suggest that this is a reboot. The flaming sword is killer, the battle scars tell a story, and the regrown horns suggest the antihero will be embracing his demonic side in the new film. In fact, the only thing we’re not crazy about is the tag “Legendary AF.” This feels like an out-of-touch attempt to appeal to Millennials and young people, and is simply not needed alongside the awesome imagery of the poster.
The film, which is directed by Neil Marshall and features Milla Jovovich as the villainous Blood Queen, is largely based on three stories from Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comics: Darkness Calls, The Wild Hunt, and The Storm and the Fury, and is said to hew very closely to the source material. That’s likely good news for fans of the comics who may have felt the previous Hellboy movies strayed too far from the character’s original medium.
Hellboy opens in theaters on April 12, 2019.
