Godzilla Still Reigns Supreme in the First Teaser for ‘Godzilla: Planet Eater’

While much of Godzilla fans’ focus lately has been on the excellent first trailer for next year’s live-action Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Toho would kindly like to remind you that their anime Godzilla franchise also has a new movie coming out soon.

The Japanese studio has just released the first teaser for Godzilla: Planet Eater, the third installment in their rapidly growing animated film franchise, and although it doesn’t reveal much (even if you speak Japanese), it does promise more destruction in the new film. Part one of the series, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters, took place thousands of years in the future, where the largest ever version of Godzilla rules the world with an iron fist after having driven humanity away. The recently-released sequel, Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle, saw the renewed battle between humans and Godzilla continue with the introduction of Mechagodzilla, whose nanotech nearly defeated the Kaiju King. Now, for part three, an even more powerful monster rises to threaten both humanity and Godzilla: Ghidorah.

The new film hits theaters in Japan on November 9, and if it’s anything like its predecessors will then arrive on Netflix a few months after that. The “planet eater” title likely refers to Ghidorah, who was teased in the previous film’s post-credits scene to have destroyed a planet already, and we’re assuming he sets his eyes (and stomach) on Earth next. The movie will mark the end of this animated Godzilla trilogy, a first for the franchise, but given its popularity we wouldn’t be too surprised (or disappointed) to see it continue beyond the initially planned three films.
