You’ll Be Able To Watch the Next Godzilla Movie Sooner Than You Think

It’s a good time to be a Godzilla fan. In addition to Legendary’s MonsterVerse films and COMET’s airings of the classic films during Monster Summer and Godzilla Movies Week, there’s also the excellent new anime Godzilla franchise from Toho that kicked off last year with Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters. Now, the sequel to that film is on the way, and you’ll be able to watch way sooner than you expected.

Godzilla: City on the Edge of Battle is set to released on Netflix in just one week on July 18, according to Bloody Disgusting. The movie was already released theatrically in Japan in May, and like its predecessor, it’s following that local run just a couple months later on Netflix. The new movie sees Haruo Sakaki and the rest of the human rebels, fresh off their demoralizing defeat at the hands of Godzilla in the previous film, activating a new ally in their battle to retake planet Earth: Mechagodzilla. The film marks the first in-action anime appearance for the robotic Godzilla incarnation following his brief deactivated appearance in Planet of the Monsters.

So far, fans have been very accepting of an anime Godzilla, with a third film already set for release in Japan this November (and another worldwide Netflix release likely to follow a couple months after). The third film’s Japanese title translates to either Godzilla: Planet Eater or Godzilla: Eater of Stars, and is widely expected to feature King Ghidorah, marking that character’s first anime appearance.

Like we said at the start of this article, it’s a good time to be a Godzilla fan.
