First ‘Extinction’ Trailer Looks Like a New Sci-Fi Classic

Michael Peña is fresh off the success of stealing the spotlight once again in Ant-Man & the Wasp, and next on his slate is a film where he’ll have to share the spotlight with some very unfriendly aliens.

Netflix has released the first trailer for their upcoming sci-fi thriller Extinction, and it features Peña as an average family man who’s suffering from strange nightmares about an alien invasion. When an actual alien invasion arrives, he realizes that his dreams were visions, and they may hold the key to repelling the alien threat. Lizzy Caplan (Cloverfield) co-stars as his wife, while Mike Colter (Luke Cage) features as his best friend. The film is directed by Ben Young (Hounds of Love) off a script by Spenser Cohen (Moonfall). You can check out the trailer below.

The invaders’ design looks pretty great, with machines that recall War of the Worlds and the aliens themselves sharing some terrifying similarities with both Alien and Predator. Once you add in the Twilight Zone-like twist of the prophetic dreams, you’ve got a formula for what could be a new sci-fi classic.

Extinction was originally scheduled for a theatrical release from Universal in January, but the studio yanked it from its schedule and then dumped it altogether. Netflix nabbed the distribution rights, and now it’s set to hit the streaming site on July 27. And it’s a good thing too, because this looks like one movie that doesn’t deserve to go extinct.
