Neill Blomkamp Shares Concept Art from His Lost ‘Alien’ Movie

We’ll sadly never get to see Neill Blomkamp’s Alien 5, but we can now at least get a glimpse of what the canceled film would have looked like.

Blomkamp had planned on doing a proper follow-up to James Cameron’s Aliens that would have righted the wrongs of the much-maligned Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection, bringing back Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, Michael Biehn’s Cpl. Hicks, and the character Newt (likely recast) from Cameron’s film. However, the sequel was scrapped by Fox after franchise creator Ridley Scott opted to continue the series himself, turning his Prometheus sequel into a bona fide Alien movie; Alien: Covenant. Covenant bombed at the box office and wasn’t exactly a hit with fans or critics either, and rumors are now swirling that its sequel — which was reportedly supposed to have begun filming in September — has been shelved.

And on the heels of that news, Blomkamp has released some concept art from his lost Alien film, and it really makes us wish he’d gotten a chance to make it. There’s a really scary scene with a xenomorph, a great image of what appears to be the Sulaco, and Ripley in a number of different outfits and looking ready to kick some alien butt. You can check out the images below, courtesy of Blomkamp’s Twitter and Instagram.

Just going through the volume of art created for this never to be made aliens sequel. From environments to characters to set design, we did a lot. Mostly over 2015. pic.twitter.com/nkfwHu3OF7

Even though it seems likely that Blomkamp will never get to make his Alien movie, the director is still plenty busy making lots of other awesome stuff. His fledgling indie production company, Oats Studios, has been routinely churning out amazing shorts for free online, and we have no doubt the talented filmmaker will once again bring his unique brand of sci-fi goodness to theaters soon.
