Get Your First Look at the New Jaegers of Pacific Rim: Uprising

The sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is starting to gear up for its 2018 release, which means we’re starting to get our first look at our next fix of Giant Robot vs Angry Kaiju action.

Unfortunately for the good guys, the events of the first movie saw the original fleet of giant robots (Jaegers) completely decimated by the creatures that emerged from the depths of the Pacific Ocean. That means Pacific Rim: Uprising will be needing a whole new array of metallic play things if humanity is going to stop the kaiju hordes. Now, details of those new Jaegers are starting to emerge, and they like they’ll comfortably match anything we saw in the first movie.

This past weekend, Bandai unveiled a series of merchandising items for the upcoming Pacific Rim sequel, including a detailed look at the new Jaegers which has now come online by way of social media.

These premium toy lines are just the first sign that del Toro’s vision is going to come to life in new and exciting ways over the next year or so. And it’s a good job, too, because Pacific Rim: Uprising‘s flagship Jaeger was also unveiled, and it looks even more bad-ass than any of its predecessors.

From this image, it looks like Gypsy Avenger will improve on the first movie’s Gypsy Danger in a number of ways. While it will still have all the bells and whistles of its predecessor– think elbow rockets and chain swords– it’s also going to have an airborne launch system, meaning we could see the one thing that the first Pacific Rim was missing….flying robots!

Though no solid plot details for Pacific Rim: Uprising have been released yet, it’s expected to take place a number of years after the events of the first movie. John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will play Jake Pentacost, the son of Idris Elba’s character, Stacker Pentacost. Boyega will be joined by other new cast members like Scott Eastwood and Jing Tian, with Rinko Kikuchi and Charlie Day both reprising their roles from the first movie.
