Fox is ready to dig deeper into the X-Files. After the network brought Mulder and Scully back for a six-episode revival series last year, Fox has revealed they’re upping the game with an expanded 10-episode season of the hit sci-fi show.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators—these are the hallmarks of great TV shows,” Fox Broadcasting president David Madden said in a statement. “And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”
Stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will return for the new season, as will writer and creator Chris Carter. Carter took a lot of flak throughout last season after many fans were critical of the writer’s influence on the show. However, with those six revival episodes ending in a cliffhanger, it’s likely that X-Files fans will still return in their droves to watch this new season.
There’s no news on exactly when the new season will air, but with production looking likely to start this Summer, The X-Files could be returning as soon as early 2018.
