Star Wars Rebels Will End After Its Fourth Season

When fans gathered inside Star Wars Celebration’s main arena on Saturday, they were expecting some big Star Wars Rebels news. Well, we certainly weren’t disappointed in that respect, but there were many groans of dismay when that big news broke. In front of more than 3,000 fans, Rebels creator Dave Filoni that the show’s upcoming fourth season will be its last.

I firmly believe that each generation needs to have their own piece of ‘Star Wars’ and this show, for a lot of kids growing up with it, is as much a piece of ‘Star Wars’ as any of the movies,” said Filoni.

The news comes as a shock to many folks, especially given that Rebels has gone on to grow such a significant and rabid fan base since it debuted back in October of 2014. But, given its proximity to the well-trodden ground of the Original trilogy (and now Rogue One), Rebels was always going to have a limited run. Plus, nothing in the TV industry is certain and after Filoni lost his chance to see a proper conclusion to his previous Star Wars show, Star Wars: Clone Wars, he appeared content with being able to ensure his Rebels characters get the conclusion they deserved.

“I know what it’s like when I don’t get to end a series. It wasn’t fun,” Filoni explained.  He went on to tease that, despite Rebels coming to an end, there’s more to come from his animation studio. “This doesn’t represent an end to anything we’re doing at animation.”
