Marvel Pays Homage to 80’s Sci-Fi Fantasy With First Trailer For Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel might just have found a way to attract lovers of cult classic genre movies into their huge legion of fans. The first trailer for Thor: Ragnarok has just been released, and it’s a visual feast of trippy modern sci-fi colliding with a wonderfully retro fantasy vibe. The end result might just be the weirdest, most exciting thing ever to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, giving even the Guardians of the Galaxy a run for their money.

Given that Taika Waititi is the man responsible for directing Thor: Ragnarok, we’re not surprised this is the vibe we’re getting. Waititi is, after all, the director who gave us the excellent What We Do in the Shadows: a hilarious mockumentary movie following a clan of vampires striving to fit in among the hipsters of modern day Wellington, New Zealand. That same light-hearted, oddball style is front and center of the new Thor: Ragnarok trailer, but it also throws an evil-looking Cate Blanchett, a face-painted Jeff Goldblum, and an Incredible Hulk dressed up like something from a 1980’s roleplaying game into this wild and weird mix.

Thor: Ragnarok, the third installment in Marvel’s Thor series, sees the titular hero banished to the other side of the Universe by a powerful goddess called Hela (Blanchett). As Hela threatens to destroy Asgardian civilization, Thor must fight his way through a deadly gladiatorial contest that sees him go up against his old ally, the Incredible Hulk.

If the premise and trailer aren’t enough to convince you that Thor: Ragnarok is worth a watch, the cast list should do the trick. As well as familiar Marvel faces like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Mark Ruffalo, Ragnarok also sees Jeff Goldblum, Cate Blanchett, Sam Neill and Westworld Tessa Thompson welcomed into the MCU. It’s also widely expected that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and a handful of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast will all make an appearance at some point, so whether you’re a Marvel fanatic or simply someone who loves the spectacle of genre cinema, Thor: Ragnarok should have something to keep you happy.
