Break out your furry loincloths, folks, because a new Masters of the Universe movie just got an official release date.
According to EW, Sony is aiming to give 2019 a He-Man holiday, penciling the upcoming project with a December 19th release date. The move appears to take advantage of a relatively open 2019 holiday season. After Disney recently confirmed that Star Wars: Episode IX will vacate the holiday period in favor of a May release, and James Cameron’s Avatar movies won’t be hitting until at least 2020, it leaves December 2019 Masters of the Universe with Universal’s adaptation of the Broadway show, Wicked, and an as yet unnamed Disney fairytale movie as competition. While both of those titles will be big at the box-office, there shouldn’t be too much crossover for what I am hoping will be a trippy and more violent take on the classic kid’s property.
But, it’s not all positive steps forward for the He-Man production. The same report also states that Sony is now looking for a new director to helm the movie. Apparently, McG (Charlie’s Angels, Supernatural) who was previously slated to direct the movie, has left the project for undisclosed reasons. But, that’s not expected to set the project back too far, and the studio is already reportedly meeting with A-list talent to fill the movie’s leading roles.
The Masters of the Universe story is being penned by Man of Steel and Batman Begins writer, David S. Goyer.
