Remember when Keanu Reeves said he was open to potentially exploring the possibility of another sequel to The Matrix? Well, it turns out Reeves wasn’t the only one with Matrix on their mind because a new report claims that Warner Bros. is seriously considering rebooting the entire franchise.
According to THR, discussions of a reboot are still early but the studio is already lining up Zak Penn (Ready Player One, X-Men: The Last Stand) to write the story. The report’s sources suggest the new Matrix movie will feature a new set of characters, but it’s not entirely clear whether or not this will be a straightforward reboot. It’s perfectly feasible that this could be a continuation of the story that featured Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, but with a time jump (backward or forwards) that takes those characters out of the picture.
Reeves had previously said that he would only consider a return to The Matrix if the Wachowskis return to write and direct, but if this report is anything to go by, it looks unlikely that will be the case. In terms of acting talent, Michael B. Jordan (Creed, Fantastic Four) is a target for the leading role.
Warner Bros. has not released an official statement just yet, but THR is certainly a reputable source, which would suggest this is a very real possibility.
In a cinematic world as rich as the one created by The Matrix series, there’s certainly ample room for further exploration. However, exactly which direction this new movie is taken, and whether or not there’s actually an appetite for more Matrix content, are two major question marks surrounding this whole discussion.
