Rey Returns Lightsaber

The Opening Moments of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Have Been Revealed

We’re still impatiently waiting for the first Star Wars: The Last Jedi trailer, but while we pass the time there’s some interesting information coming out of a recent Disney shareholder meeting. Various reports from that meeting are stating that those present were treated to an early look at footage from the upcoming Star Wars release.

The footage is unlikely to leak online, but we do have a very brief description of it thanks to some of the people who got to see it.

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” clip is being screened. But it’s a joke, sort of! We just got a few seconds of Rey handing Luke a lightsaber.

After a few jokes, though, they got treated to what is probably the first screening of scenes that will likely appear in The Last Jedi’s trailer when it screens at Star Wars Celebration (and online) next month.

We just saw more “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” footage. In it, Luke asks Rey, “Who are you?” Then we see her deftly handle a lightsaber.

Director Rian Johnson has previously said that, unlike previous Star Wars saga movies, Episode VIII will pick up immediately where Episode VII left off, with Rey meeting Luke Skywalker. This means that it’s highly likely the scene described above is the opening moment of The Last Jedi. Some had speculated that Skywalker would know who Rey was, or at the very least would be expecting her, but this description would seem to quash such an idea. The idea of Rey responding with some mad lightsaber skills is certainly exciting, but after learning of all this, I’m now desperate to know how Luke responds.

That scene alone would hardly equate to a ‘clip’, though, and it looks like they were indeed shown more, because subsequent tweets detail some of the alien worlds and characters set to appear, including the General Leia Organa, played by the late Carrie Fisher.

One last thing on the “Last Jedi” footage: We saw all sorts of settings — mountains, oceans, forests, deserts. Look suitably epic, exotic.

More on “The Last Jedi” clip: We saw a shot of an X-wing wobbling mid-air, under attack inside a giant ship. Looked like a wounded bird.

More on “The Last Jedi” clip, since ppl are asking: General Leia Organa was onscreen for just a second in military garb and didn’t speak.

It’s not much, but at this stage, we’ll take it.

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi is released in theaters on December 15th.
