Star Trek: Discovery finally has a captain. Jason Isaacs, of Harry Potter fame, is the actor who has secured the top job on the Star Trek franchise’s latest starship, but the post comes with a slight caveat: Isaacs will not be the star of the show.
Isaacs will play a character named Captain Lorca, but as we’ve known for some time now, Discovery will not actually focus on the ship’s top job. Instead, the star of the show will be Lorca’s number one, Lieutenant Commander Rainsford. Rainsford is played by The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green who heads up a cast including the likes of Doug Jones (Science Officer Saru), James Frain (Spock’s father, Sarek), and Shazad Latif (a Klingon leader) to name but a few.
Production on Star Trek: Discovery is already underway, but the show has trodden a troubled path to becoming a reality. Initially slated for an early 2017 release, Discovery has encountered a number of setbacks and delays, but it’s now looking like all systems are go for a Fall 2017 release.
Though Isaacs won’t be the lead, he’ll certainly add a touch of class to proceedings. Best known for his performance as Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter movie series, Isaacs most recently impressed as the villain of Netflix’s weird-but-brilliant sci-fi show, The OA.
