While everyone is talking about the drama at the Oscars, we were sitting and waiting for an annual award show honoring films and TV shows that we actually care about. Today, that wait is over, because the nominees for the 43rd annual Saturn Awards have just been released, and as usual they’re stacked with all the great stuff you’ve actually seen or heard about.
Produced by The Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, the Saturn Awards recognize the very best of genre TV and Movies. They might not get quite as much hype as the Golden Globes or Academy Awards, but they sure as hell are more interesting.
The big movie winners in this year’s nominees list were Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and B.F.G., while AMC’s The Walking Dead and HBO’s Westworld led the pack for TV.
The Oscars always surprise and disappoint sci-fi fans, but the Saturn Awards aren’t without their own controversies. Sure, Amy Adams got the love she deserved for her role in Arrival, and John Goodman got recognized for his stellar performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane, but there were more than a few surprises among this year’s nominees. Jennifer Lawrence getting a Best Actress nod for Passengers is certainly an odd one, as is the inclusion of Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad in the ‘Best Comic-to-Motion Picture Release’ category. Most surprising, though, is the omission of Oscar-nominated Kubo and the Two Strings from the Best Animated Movie and Best Visual Effects categories, both of which it got nods for at the Oscars.
