Could Kong: Skull Island be the most bonkers movie of 2017? It seems like a tall task given we’ve already seen Matt Damon fighting monsters on the Great Wall of China, and we’re soon to see Anne Hathaway as a city-crushing Kaiju, but the final trailer for Kong’s latest big screen appearance has us convinced it’s got the title in the bag.
In the action-packed trailer, we see nods to numerous different movie genres, riffs on a classic 1960’s track from The Animals, and enough giant monsters fighting giant monsters to make us feel like we’re ten years old again. This is madness, and we love it.
Yes, you did just see King Kong stripping down a large tree and using it as an incredibly effective baseball bat. Yes, Kong did just shake down a helicopter like it was a bag of M&Ms. Yes, we are getting giddy with excitement.
If the movie lives up to the potential its trailers have hinted at, Kong: Skull Island could do for monster movies what Iron Man did for Superhero movies back in 2008, which is a good thing considering he’s scheduled to face-off against Godzilla in a couple of years.
Kong: Skull Island is set for release on March 10th. Check out the official synopsis below:
The producers of Godzilla reimagine the origins of one the most powerful monster myths of all in “Kong: Skull Island,” from Warner Bros. Pictures, Legendary Pictures and Tencent Pictures. This compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (“The Kings of Summer”) tells the story of a diverse team of scientists, soldiers and adventurers uniting to explore a mythical, uncharted island in the Pacific, as dangerous as it is beautiful. Cut off from everything they know, the team ventures into the domain of the mighty Kong, igniting the ultimate battle between man and nature. As their mission of discovery becomes one of survival, they must fight to escape a primal Eden in which humanity does not belong.
