If you thought that Tom Cruise had already reached the pinnacle of crazy movie stunts, think again. The star of the Mission: Impossible series and the upcoming Top Gun sequel is already planning his next grand movie stunt which will be the one to rule them all: Cruise is going to shoot a movie in space.
This is not a joke. Deadline reported on May 4 (Star Wars Day, how fitting) that Cruise was working with both Elon Musk’s Space X and NASA on shooting an action-adventure movie in outer space. No other details are known about the film as of yet — there’s no title, the plot is unknown, and no studio is attached — but if it gets made, it will be the first narrative film ever to be shot in space. The article claims that Cruise himself would be making the trip to the final frontier aboard “Elon Musk’s spaceship,” which is a sentence that could only make sense in 2020.
Following Deadline’s report, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine confirmed the news on Twitter, while also stating that Cruise will be heading to the International Space Station to film the movie. “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station!” Bridenstine wrote. “We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”

Cruise filming a movie in outer space is the next logical step for a guy who has already climbed the world’s tallest building, clung to the side of a plane as it took off, performed a HALO jump (over 160 times to get the right take), held his breath for six minutes underwater, and learned how to fly and perform 360s in a helicopter — all just so you feel like the cost of your movie ticket was money well-spent. Frankly, we can’t wait to see what kind of madness he has in store for us onboard the ISS.
