It recently became official that director Sam Raimi will return to the superhero genre at long last as the new director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and now comes the news that his old pal Bruce Campbell wants to come along for the ride.
Campbell tweeted out a news story about Raimi confirming that he’d taken the Doctor Strange job, and the Ash vs Evil Dead actor added the following comment: “Huh. Surely, there must be SOME character to challenge the good Doctor…” Now, that’s admittedly a pretty ambiguous statement on the part of Campbell, but he does seem to be lobbying for a role as a villain in the film. Either that, or this is his cheeky way of telling us that Raimi has already cast him in the film as a bad guy. We’re trying not to read too much into it (since we don’t want to be disappointed if Campbell isn’t in the film), but at this point we’d be surprised if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness didn’t involve Bruce Campbell in some way.
As fans of Raimi and/or Campbell are no doubt aware, the pair’s relationship goes back decades. The two met in high school and became fast friends, making home movies together that eventually led to the cult classic The Evil Dead, which was Campbell’s first starring role and Raimi’s directorial debut. They’ve continued to collaborate over the decades, with Campbell cameoing in Raimi’s previous Marvel superhero endeavor, the original Spider-Man trilogy.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is expected to hit theaters — with or without Campbell — on May 7, 2021.
