It’s no secret that we love all things Godzilla here at COMET, and who can blame us? When it comes to movie monsters, Godzilla is undoubtedly the king. And just with anyone who’s the best at what they do, Godzilla has seen a number of imitators come and go over the years. The latest is Raiga, the Kaiju star of an ultra low budget mockbuster called Raiga: God of the Monsters.
The film has just released its first trailer, and it looks like the absolute best kind of cheesy sci-fi. The movie’s special effects are hilariously low-tech, with rubber suits and puppets that look straight out of a 1950s Toho production. Normally when we see these kinds of cheap retro effects in a modern sci-fi movie they are utilized in a tongue-in-cheek manner, with a self-aware attitude that generally doesn’t excuse the shoddy production values. But it looks to our eyes that Raiga is playing things straight. The trailer’s dramatic score and concerned-looking actors are juxtaposed beautifully by the extremely non-threatening monsters on screen, giving us the potential for a true cult classic rather than a film that’s merely posing as one. sive melting of the southern polar ice cap, disrupting Earth’s ecosystem. The receding ice brings long dorma nt ancient sea creatures back to life, monsters that set their sights on Japan. Among the kaiju is an enormous sea beast the locals refer to as the legendary Raiga. The monster attacks the city of Asakusa, bringing death and destruction as he tramples buildings and lays waste to the military. Can Raiga be stopped, or will all of Japan be destroyed by his fury?
It’s so rare to see a genuine “so bad it’s good” movie these days, but it looks like Raiga: God of the Monsters may be just that. The movie is out on DVD now after its release on April 14.
