The Witcher is officially one of the biggest hits on TV at the moment, but fans shouldn’t get too comfortable with its format, as some big changes are apparently on the way in season two. But don’t worry, whatever (law of) surprise they have in store sounds like it’ll be for the best.
While popular with viewers, it’s no secret that The Witcher struggled with critics during its first season. The series currently holds a decidedly mediocre 60 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many complaints aimed at the show’s unfocused storyline and timeline jumps. But for season two, those arguments will be moot, as the series’ plot will be much more focused and streamlined moving forward now that the series’ three main leads, who were largely separated in season one, have mostly come together.
“What’s great about season two, I can tell you, is that, in what we’ve written, the story becomes much more focused,” showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich told Games Radar in a recent interview. “There’s a stronger drive in the story, because all of the relationships that we’ve been setting up in season one, actually start to come into fruition in season two. Characters start meeting and interacting more. That goes well sometimes. It doesn’t go well sometimes. But it’s kind of like, all of those building blocks that we set up for the world, finally start to come together into something a little more concrete.”
Hissrich also revealed that she has seven seasons of the series all mapped out, so if you’re worried about the later seasons floundering a la another epic fantasy series, you needn’t be. “The truth is, we have a ton of source material. We could write the show for a very, very long time,” she said.
The Witcher has already been greenlit for season two, but until we find out just when we can expect the new season, we’ll be rocking out to “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” on repeat.
