This is the TV series you’re looking for, as it’s been confirmed that Ewan McGregor is set to again put on his robe for a new Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Deadline has confirmed that McGregor will once again portray the Jedi Master in an as-yet-untitled series on Disney’s upcoming streaming service, Disney+. This will mark the third live-action Star Wars series for the service, following Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian and another untitled series that follows Rogue One characters Cassian Andor and K-2S0.
Disney has not yet confirmed that the series is happening, but they’re widely expected to do so at their upcoming D23 Convention this weekend. Hopefully then we’ll learn some more details about the series, including when it takes place, what other characters may be appearing, and when the series will premiere.
The late Sir Alec Guinness originated the character of Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi in Star Wars, and his performance remains legendary today. McGregor portrayed a younger version of the character in the Star Wars prequel films, and though those films are much maligned, McGregor has mostly been able to escape their criticism as his Obi-Wan is frequently cited as one of the trilogy’s few bright spots.
Star Wars movies may be taking a short break after this year’s Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker — indeed, the Obi-Wan series began life years ago as a standalone film — but the franchise is thriving on the small screen. There hasn’t been this much Star Wars on TV in a very long time… now if we could just get a new holiday special we’d be all set.
