With so many zombies out there, it takes an original take to stand out. Unless you’re putting out something that upends the genre like Zombieland, you risk having your movie become lost in a sea of the undead. 2002’s 28 Days Later was such a film, which is why we’re psyched to hear that a sequel from the original writer and director may be on the way.
28 Days Later already has a sequel in 2007’s 28 Weeks Later, and while that is a fine film in its own right, it didn’t quite capture the magic of the original. That could be due to the fact that it was lacking 28 Days Later director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, but the third installment could reunite the pair. “Alex Garland and I have a wonderful idea for the third part. It’s properly good,” Boyle told The Independent. “The original film led to a bit of a resurgence in the zombie drama and it doesn’t reference any of that. It doesn’t feel stale at all. [Garland]’s concentrating on directing his own work at the moment, so it’s stood in abeyance really, but it’s a you-never-know.”
Garland has gone on to have considerable success as a director in recent years, helming the acclaimed sci-fi films Ex Machina and Annihilation, but it sounds like he still may be interested in teaming with Boyle to resurrect their zombie franchise. The writer last spoke about the project in 2015, according to Bloody Disgusting, saying that it would likely be called 28 Months Later since that gives them room to produce 28 Years Later down the line if they want to.
A third 28 Days Later film is far from confirmed at this time, but just knowing that Boyle and Garland are discussing it should be enough to excite even the most zombied-out horror movie fans.
